Common American Mahjong terms to help a first game feel less mysterious.

Bam

The bamboo suit, numbered one through nine.

Charleston

A structured exchange of tiles near the beginning of an American Mahjong game.

Crak

The character suit, numbered one through nine.

Dot

The circle suit, numbered one through nine.

Exposure

A completed grouping placed face up after calling a discard.

Joker

A flexible tile used in eligible groupings according to American Mahjong rules.

Mahjong

The declaration made when a player completes a valid hand.

Rack and pusher

The rack holds a player’s tiles; the pusher helps move a wall into position.

Wall

A row of stacked face-down tiles built by each player before the deal.
